While all of these notebooks are highly portable, a few such as this Fujitsu Siemens model truly deserve the “ultra” prefix. The P7120 weighs just 1.3kg and has undoubtedly the smallest bulk of the group, measuring just 30mm at its thickest point.
In order to achieve this, the screen size is smaller than most: just 10.6in with a widescreen resolution of 1,280 x 768. It’s bright and clear with a glossy coating. The panel is well protected by the lid despite its apparent flimsiness and the chassis as a whole is well built. The Wi-Fi switch is useful, as is the button for the power-save mode. Not that you’ll need it: the P7120 lasted 6hrs 21mins under light use and an impressive 3hrs when worked hard.
But unfortunately working hard isn’t something the Lifebook is good at. It’s
powered by an ultra-low voltage 1.2GHz Pentium M 753 with 512MB of memory.
If typing documents or web browsing is all you’ll be doing, the P7120 is fine, but with an overall 2D score of 0.50 it certainly isn’t a viable option if you need to do anything more demanding.
Aside from this weakness, the remaining components are respectable: a fingerprint reader and TPM module for security, a DVD writer (although not a dual-layer model), Bluetooth and Windows XP Professional. A three-year collect-and-return warranty is welcome too, making this a fine alternative to the winners if portability is more important than power.
